Understanding Basics of CNC Milling
CNC milling is a computer-controlled manufacturing method. It involves removing material from a solid “blank” material, such as a chunk of aluminum, and turning it into the desired product, component, or part.
The blank workpiece is held in a vice or a similar holding fixture, which is mounted on a work table. This table is able to rotate and pivot for two axes of movement. Then, a rotating spindle with cutting tools mounted on it will remove material from the workpiece, based on a digital CAD file. This process is automatic.

As-machined – The part will not go through any further finishing or machining after being made, resulting in a rough, ~125 RA µin finish
Brushed – By using a gritty polishing tool that moves unidirectionally, a satin-like, brushed-metal surface can be created.
Smoothed – We can achieve a smooth surface of between 62.5 RA µin and 32 RA µin by using special machine tools, providing a sleeker finish.
Anodized (Type II) – Clear and colored anodized finishes are available. This process deposits a thin layer of anodic oxide material onto the part, which changes its appearance and helps with corrosion and wear resistance.
Anodized hardcoat (Type III) – Type III anodization uses a thicker layer of anodic oxide material that further enhances resistance to corrosion and wear & tear
Electropolish – Using a specialized electrochemical process, electropolishing smooths out metal parts, removes burrs, and reduces the overall roughness of the surface.
Bead blasted – Bead blasting uses a high-pressure stream of glass beads to remove all tool marks from a part. Depending on how fine the beads are, this can result in a satin or matte surface. Bead blasting is mostly used for aesthetic purposes.
Powder-coated – Powder coating uses polymer paint that is applied electrostatically and cured under heat. This results in a boost to strength, wear-resistance, and corrosion. Powder coating is also available in a multitude of colors
